Asking for gifts is tacky, isn’t it?

Aside

You might think a gift registry is old school. Maybe you think it’s tacky. You don’t want to seem greedy “asking” for gifts.

Well guess what?!

People are going to buy you a gift for your wedding anyway. It may as well be something you would like and can use.

With that being said, you don’t have to go overboard. A gift registry can be as simple or as crazy as you want.

I was married at 27 and had been living on my own for a while. My husband was in the same boat (29) We had many of the common household items already. We used our Target gift registry as a way to upgrade and update some of the items we already were using. Once we received gift items, we were able to “donate” our starter items to younger siblings.

Maybe this is your circumstance, maybe not.

If you are new and just starting out, think of the little things. You and your future spouse might need a lot as you get settle into married life. Register for items such as towels, measuring cups and even serving spoons. All these things add up and when you are just getting started.

A traditional gift registry might not be your thing, that is okay. Contact your local travel agent and have them set up a “honeymoon registry” for you. This way, you can go on your dream honeymoon or do extra excursions while there if you already have one planned.

Tech savvy? Amazon has a gift registry as well. You don’t even need to leave your home- and neither do your guests. This is very convenient for those who might be traveling from afar (or celebrating from afar). Nothing beats 2 day prime shipping.

If you truly don’t need or want anything for your wedding, there are registry options for you too. Ask guests to donate to your favorite (or their favorite) charity in lieu of wedding gifts. There is a worthy cause out there that could use your support, trust me.

Now that we have established why you should register and gone over some options- consider these etiquette suggestions.

  • DO NOT – I repeat do not put your registry information on your wedding invites. This is tacky. Your registry information goes two places. (1) your wedding website (2) your shower invites. People will find out your registry information.
  • Register for different items at different price points. You want your guests to have options that fit the budget. Registering for only high end items is not the way to go.
  • Check on your registry often. If the selection for people to pick from is dwindling- add more items. This is really important in the two weeks leading up to a shower or your wedding day.
  • After every shower, after every party and after every gift is opened- Send a “Thank You”. A handwritten message is the way to go. There is nothing sweeter than a personalized “Thank You” expressing gratitude for a gift received. You might not dig the squirrel feeder your cousin gave you- but they thought it was neat. They thought you would like it. That is what matters.

Even though a gift registry might seem like a thing of the past, it’s not. There is a reason why they exist and most importantly- why you should have one.

You get married one time, embrace the motions. Just get registered.

On Point: Menswear Trends

A scratchy black tuxedo is no longer the norm when it comes to today’s menswear. The modern groom wants to look and feel as amazing in his wedding day frocks.

We have started to see a shift in the formal menswear industry, especially in 2015.  It’s really become all about individuality and is very personality focused.

Narrow shawl lapels are replacing the once thick satin styles that are reminiscent of the high school prom.

Other than traditional black, white or ivory; today’s groom has a full spectrum of colors to choose from. Navy is gaining popularity. We are seeing shades of gray every weekend.

Not everyone wants a colorful vest to match the wedding color scheme. Suspenders, fabric vests and even cummerbunds are among the new selections. Designers are really providing so many choices. Every groom can truly create a custom look.

Modern day menswear is all about the fit. Today’s groom wants the convenience of a rental but the fit of a tailor-made suit. Designers are responding to this request. There are now three available “fits” to ensure the best look.

Today’s groom has so many more choices when it comes to his wedding day attire. Gone are the days when the only personal touch to his get up was the vest color.

The more you know:

Did you know that Affairs by Brittany provides each groom with a try on? He is actually able to see and try on a sample of his exact wedding day look.

Buy Suits or Rent Tuxes?

The question so many modern grooms are asking.  Should we rent tuxes? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy a suit?

There are pros and cons to both options. At the end of the day, there is no right and wrong- each wedding party is completely unique and so is their formalwear choice.

Renting Tuxedos:

This is the most common option, and for good reason. First of all, it’s easy. You select the attire and the guys just go and get sized. Tuxes come in the week of the wedding and everyone can just pick them up. After the wedding is over, they can simply be dropped back off. No cleaning, no fuss- nothing to keep track of. Also, many times there are attractive rental discounts where a couple can get free rentals and save up to $40 off each rental.

Buying Suits:

This option is rapidly gaining popularity among couples. Who wouldn’t want a nice new suit? Many times the gentleman in your party can purchase a brand new jacket and pants for around $160 and sometimes less. This is perfect for the casual groom who wears suits to work or gets dressed up regularly. For weddings where this isn’t the case, the new suit will likely spend much of it’s time hanging in the back of a closet. Don’t forget tailoring and accessory items are extra.

Renting Suits:

This is a happy medium. The gentleman have all the benefits of renting (discounts, freebies, ease of picking up and dropping off). They don’t need to worry about getting to a tailor finding and paying for accessory’s. Many times, the rental suits are of higher quality than their “for purchase” counterparts. They will fit better and look nicer in photographs.

Your Big Day: On Video!

You have your dress, your venue and many other aspects of your big day all planned out. Although you certainly have a photographer. What about a videographer?

There is nothing more special than being able to re-live your big day- as it happens. Can you imagine spending your 10th anniversary watching your vows as they were actually spoken?

Pictures say 1000 words, however videos show the words being spoken.

With that being said, we asked Amy from Eclipse Multimedia and Video to fill us in a little about wedding videography.

Why video?

– I frequently have wedding couples who are still deciding if they want a videographer or not. At weddings, I quite often have guests that come up to me and say, “I wish we would have had a video of our wedding. There is so much I can’t remember about it.” The day goes so fast and the couple may miss so much of it.

Between preparation, pictures, running around and greeting guests – a couple are often  overwhelmed or in a happy daze. And there are so many times when the couple is not even in the same place as the action- like before their arrival to the reception.

A wedding video is not just for the couple- but for their families too. It is also important to capture the family members who are all gathered together in one place. There are so few times when all our loved ones are gathered together in the same place.

Having a videographer instead of a family friend or family member is beneficial- they are focused only on the video, not  on the events or catching up with others at the wedding.

When do you arrive to the ceremony?

Depending on the package and the number of angles you have -the earlier we arrive. Simply let us know your requests.

What do your packages cover?

All ceremony packages will cover some before footage/getting ready shots, the entire ceremony and a few shots after the ceremony. (receiving line, etc. ) You can also include the entire receiving line and your exit to the reception as an add-on. We can also include the entire reception as an add-on as well. (your arrival, glass clinking/kissing, toasts, cake cutting, the first 3 dances, etc.)

What about examples of your work?

Couples often ask for examples of my work- I believe this is so important to ask of your videograhper. You should absolutely make sure the person you choose has experience with weddings. Not every wedding is the same. I’m very willing to be creative with each couples unique style for their wedding.

I have so many previous clients tell me how much fun they have watching their videos. They loved to see all the details they missed on their big day. Parents and Grandparents loved to see all the family gathered together.

A wedding video may not be something you watch everyday, but it is something you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Honeymoon Planning Tips

Anyone else miss the Spring-like weather we had last week?

The recent temperature changes have us dreaming of sunny skies and bright clear waters.

No matter what stage of planning you are in, surely you have to include a honeymoon! Lisa  from Travel-Travel Fargo-Moorhead Inc. has sent us some tips to help with your dream honeymoon.

You and your new life partner, cocktails with umbrellas and a romantic sunset- Does it get any better? Didn’t think so.

Take a tip (or a few) from Miss. Lisa and be prepared for the trip of a lifetime:

When is it best to plan for your honeymoon?

At least 6 months prior. Some couples who get married in the summer months put off their honeymoon until the winter..

Where should you go on your honeymoon?

The possibilities are endless! People are really starting to think outside the box. Walking along the beach at sunset in Hawaii isn’t everyone’s dream anymore. Mexico and the Caribbean are always going to be popular. However, I have had clients go on a tour of Ireland. Or going on an Alaskan cruise, or mountain climbing or stay in a bungalow in Bora Bora.

How much should you budget for your honeymoon?

This isn’t a simple questions to answer. It does come back to the saying though: You get what you pay for. Typically, your honeymoon will be the highest ticket trip you ever take. Also, take into consideration the destination you select for your honeymoon. Most countries require passports or travel visas- you will need to take that cost into consideration.

Should I book my honeymoon online?

When booking your honeymoon, I strongly suggest using a travel agent. They have the knowledge of the different resorts and destinations. They have either stayed there themselves or have had clients that did. Also, if something were to go wrong during your honeymoon – having a travel agent to deal with the problem is much easier than using some 800 number. Travel agents can help you get more bang for your buck. They are familiar with the extra amenities you will receive for celebrating your honeymoon.  From room upgrades, breakfast in bed and couples massages to limo transfers and private dinners on the beach.

Healthy You: 10 ways to be happier and feel better!

Image

Who doesn’t want to be happier? Especially with the weather as of late, we can find ourselves a little down and out. That feeling of tiredness, exhaustion, and irritability can be fixed.

According to a recent article featured on Self Magazine’s website, here are 10 ways we can become happier and feel better.

1. Eliminate Clutter!

This concept sounds so simple, but for most of us- we are used to living under a ton of stuff. Start with your work-space, move onto your closet, and finish in your kitchen.

Surely you have memos, papers, and old paper clutter that could use a trip to the recycling center. A clean work-space is a happy work-space.

It will be spring, sometime soon- I promise! If you haven’t already done so, clean out those winter clothes and replace them with spring ones.

Don’t stop with your closet- head straight to the kitchen. Get rid of old junk food and scrub your fridge. You might be surprised on how much expired food and nasty grime is in there.

2. Take a multivitamin!

Research has shown that especially women need their vitamins. Even if you eat a well rounded diet, chances are you are lacking in somewhere. Overtime, this could take a toll on your body and overall well being. Such a simple lifestyle change can make a big impact on how you feel.

3. Drink more water!

Your body is mostly made from it. No wonder why you need 8-10 glasses a day. Water not only keeps your digestive system at top performance, it also does wonders for hair and skin.

4. Don’t be a whiner!

Complaining and whining will get you no where. If something is not going the way you want it to, make the changes. Dwelling on something or feeling sorry for yourself will not make you feel good. Be the change you are seeking, this will make you happy.

5. Operate like a machine!

Well not really, but have a routine. Knowing what to expect and what to accomplish will help you stay on task. When you complete everything in a day you are needing to you feel accomplished. Accomplished people are happy people.

6. Move your body!

Exercise not only makes you look good, it actually makes you happy. Moving your body releases endorphin’s which are the happy chemicals in the brain. Plus, if you look good – you feel good.

7. Eat better!

Sugar is sweet but will not make you sweet! Eating good healthy food will maintain regular blood sugar levels and will keep your mood in check. Over eating makes you feel icky and full. Sugary over-processed foods on the other hand might give you an instant “energy” boost but will make you crash hard very fast- making you feel bad.

8. Get your 8 hours!

A grown adult needs at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night to function well. If you are getting less than that, of course you feel groggy and irritated! Your brain literally cannot function on little or no sleep. If your well rested you feel better, look better and are then happier.

9. Have fun!

Each day do something that makes you smile. Maybe take a quick walk outside or laugh at a funny Facebook post. No matter what it is, do something you enjoy- even a little bit. The act of laughing alone will brighten your mood and make for a happier day!

10. Love Love Love!

Love is the best thing you can do to brighten your mood! Even if you don’t have a significant other: Love your pet, love your friends, love yourself. Love will surely increase your mood and make you feel better. Love is also contagious- it will make the recipient of your love feel better too. Who doesn’t love to be loved?

Follow these simple, no fuss ways to be happier and feel better! In no time, the sun will be out (and warm) and there will be color outside.

Have a fabulous day!
